Mary Wallace

Question:

256 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that 29 pupils are leaving Donacarney primary school in County Meath in June 1997, and that 80 additional pupils are enrolled for September 1997; if her attention has further been drawn to the requirement of two new classrooms in addition to the two undersized prefabs which were provided in November 1996, and in addition to the class currently occupying the school gym since January 1997; if her attention has further been drawn to the consequent requirement of a minimum of a three-classroom extension to commence construction immediately in order to be ready for the 80 additional pupils enrolled for 1997 and in view of the fact that the four old classrooms in the old school built in 1964 do not comply with current standards regarding overcrowding and require having internal walls demolished and converting of four rooms to three; and if she will make a statement on the matter in view of the huge housing developments in the immediate catchment area of the school. [8092/97]

My Department's planning section is currently examining the accommodation needs of Donacarney national school, County Meath. When this process is completed, my Department will be in touch with school management.
