Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

277 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education whether the review of the system of paying grants and bonuses to secondary schools for orchestras and military bands has been completed; and, if so, if she will make a statement on the recommendations of the review. [8222/97]

I wish to inform the Deputy that there is no review under way by my Department concerning the system of paying grants and bonuses to secondary schools for the purpose of encouraging the training of choirs and orchestras.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

278 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the amount of funding per county to for secondary school orchestras and bands; and if she will make a statement on the possibility of extending this scheme to primary schools in view of the recognised value of music to early child development. [8223/97]

Details of grants and bonuses paid to secondary schools by county in 1996 for the purposes of encouraging the training of choirs and orchestras is set out in the following table. I have no plans at present to extend this scheme to schools at primary level.
