283 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the provisions, if any, in the 1997 budget to increase the grant assistance for third level students to a more realistic figure; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8231/97]
The 1997 schemes of student support will be issued to the local authorities and vocational education committees by the end of April or early May 1997 and any improvements will be outlined at that stage following discussions between my Department and the Department of Finance.
The level of maintenance grant is normally reviewed having regard to changes in the rate of inflation rates while the level of income thresholds is reviewed in the light of movements in the average industrial wage.
