Noel Dempsey

Question:

316 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice when the next batch of recruitment will take place for the Garda Síochána; and whether the new recruits will be taken from an existing list or whether further public advertisements will be put in place. [8120/97]

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

325 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Justice when it is proposed to advertise to recruit gardaí; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8319/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 316 and 325 together.

The current Garda recruitment competition covers the period to 31 December 1997. A total of 600 trainees are scheduled to be admitted to the Garda college in four quarterly intakes this year and these are all being recruited from the current competition.

The Government recently approved the holding of a new Garda recruitment competition in 1997 to cover the three year period 1998 to 2000 inclusive. It is expected that this competition will be advertised in the near future.
