Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Mildred Fox

Question:

320 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if she will review the policing situation in the Kilcoole area in order to provide extra gardaí; if she intends to provide extra gardaí for the Kilcoole area for the Irish Open; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8238/97]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that Kilcoole is policed by the gardaí assigned to Greystones Garda Station. The area is regularly patrolled by both uniform and plain clothes personnel assisted as necessary by members of the divisional crime task force unit and the divisional drugs unit. I understand there is a community garda assigned to the Kilcoole area on a full-time basis and that this member regularly liaises with the local community and has the use of a community policing van for the purposes of carrying out his duties.

The Garda authorities have informed me they are satisfied that the current Garda coverage afforded to Kilcoole area is adequate in meeting its present policing requirements. However, they have assured me the situation will be kept under continuous review and any changes necessary made to ensure an adequate policing service to the area.

I understand from the Garda authorities that arrangements are currently being made for the policing of the Murphy's Irish Golf Championship which is to beheld at Druids Glen from 3 to 6 July 1997. While no final decision has been made in this regard it is envisaged that Garda personnel will be drawn from the Dublin Metropolitan Area (East) and the Wexford Division for the duration of the event.
