Question:

324 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of temporary releases granted to prisoners in Shelton Abbey in December 1996; the duration and reason for such releases; the number of prisoners who were in attendance for dinner on 25 December 1996 out of the total capacity of 56; and the meal which was served at this dinner. [8309/97]

A total of 68 temporary releases were granted to prisoners from Shelton Abbey under the Criminal Justice Act, 1960, during the month of December 1996. The duration of these releases ranged from a few hours to ten days and the reasons ranged from attendance at a hospital appointment to securing employment.

Standard Christmas dinner was served to 15 prisoners on 25 December 1996.
