Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ivor Callely

Question:

346 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of personnel working in his office on a non-established basis; and the number of such personnel who have unlimited use of mobile telephones which are charged to or reimbursed by his Department. [8289/97]

There are three unestablished staff working on a contract basis attached to my office and a further four working in the research unit which was established to support me in my role as a party leader in Government.

Mobile telephones are provided by the Department for my special adviser, my personal secretary and the senior research assistant. They are provided for official business purposes and not for unlimited use.

Question:

353 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the number of personnel working in his office on a non-established basis; and the number of such personnel who have unlimited use of mobile telephones which are charged to or reimbursed by his Department. [8291/97]

I propose to take Question Nos. 347 and 353 together.

Mobile phones have been allocated to a limited number of staff located in my office, one of whom is non-established, in the office of the Minister of State, in the press office and in the permanent representation in Brussels. All are for use in connection with official duties.

Of the four staff working in my office on a non-established basis, one has a mobile phone. The Department pays the rental cost and the cost of official calls.
In 1996, the total cost was £11,006 and the estimated cost for 1997 is £12,000.
