Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Animal Carcases Disposal.

Noel Davern

Question:

382 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will allow kennels to install their own incinerator facilities in order to destroy the required parts of carcases as required under the regulations of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8097/97]

Under the European Communities (Knackery) Regulations, 1996, knackery premises must be licensed and registered by my Department. Under the definition in the regulation a knackery includes "kennels where dead animals or parts thereof are fed to hounds".

While I can attach conditions to the licence they do not extend to the incinerator aspects as raised by the Deputy.
