Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cervical Screening.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

37 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health his views on the fact that the cervical smear test service in Ireland is in crisis and the proposals, if any, he has to improve the situation. [7880/97]

Limerick East): I am aware that, on occasions, in a small number of hospitals the waiting period for the reporting of routine cervical smear results exceeds the recommended interval of one month. I must, however, emphasise that urgent or special cases are dealt with immediately.

I have approved a programme worth £1.5 million which will put in place additional consultant and cytologist posts. This enhancement of the cervical cytology service will ensure the reporting of results within one month as far as possible.
