Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

76 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Finance if he will admit animal welfare as a category for receipt of funding under the national lottery in view of the excellent work carried out by the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7898/97]

Under the National Lottery Act, 1986, the Government may designate additional purposes for which national lottery funds may be allocated.

As the Deputy will appreciate, demands for lottery funding greatly exceed the resources available. I have no plans at present to propose that additional beneficiary categories be designated. However, the representations made by the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been brought to the attention of the National Lottery Review Group.
