Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

146 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Education when she will sanction the commencement of the planning for the physical education hall for St. Michael's secondary school, Wellmount Road, Finglas, Dublin 11, roof repairs for Ballymun comprehensive, Dublin 11, and emergency repairs to St. Joseph's national school, Ballymun, Dublin 11. [8517/97]

An application has been received for the provision of PE facilities at St. Michael's secondary school, Wellmount Road, Dublin 11.

It is the policy of my Department to provide physical education facilities on a phased basis at all second level schools where such facilities are not already available. However, the principal factor which determines progress in this area is the amount of capital funding available in any given financial year. Given the limited resources available, the priority for the foreseeable future as far as the second level capital programme is concerned will continue to be the provision of essential classroom accommodation generally. The provision of PE facilities where these are not being planned at present will resume as soon as pressure on available resources for classrooms has eased.

The roof repairs project at Ballymun comprehensive school, Dublin 11 is progressing and it is intended that the repairs will be undertaken next summer.

Tony Killeen

Question:

147 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education if she will make finance available in 1997 for the building project at Kilkee national school, County Clare; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8518/97]

Funding for the proposed building project at Kilkee national school, County Clare, must be looked at in the light of existing contractual commitments and grants already sanctioned by my Department. Recently, I approved the progression of 27 national school projects for tender and contract stages and I expect to release a number of additional projects to tender and contract on a phased basis later this year. The project at Kilkee is among those which will be considered at that stage.
