Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Building Projects.

Frank Crowley

Question:

156 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Education when she will proceed to tender for the additional rooms required at Scoil Treasa, Kanturk, County Cork, in view of the fact that they are needed as a matter of urgency. [8530/97]

An extension is currently being planned for this school. Architectural planning is proceeding and my Department's technical staff are currently examining the combined stage 4-5 submission for this project. When this submission has been approved, the question of inviting tenders will then be considered.

At this stage, it is not possible to indicate when the project will proceed to construction as this will depend on the availability of funding and the Department's other commitments and priorities. However, every effort is being made to have the planning of the extension completed as soon as possible with a view to being in a position to invite tenders as soon as funding is available.

Matt Brennan

Question:

157 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Education when improvement works, which were approved some time ago, will be carried out to a school (details supplied) in County Sligo. [8531/97]

My Department has received an application for improvement works from the school referred to by the Deputy. The works in question have not been approved.

I am not in a position to provide funding for this project. At present, I am dealing with a backlog of projects arising out of major cuts in the capital funding of primary schools in the 1988-92 period. Consequently, it is not possible to fund all deserving projects.
