Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Potato Industry.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

35 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the measures, if any, he proposes to take to alleviate the serious crisis in the potato industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8377/97]

A significant increase last year in the area under potatoes, combined with improved yields, resulted in a level of production in excess of domestic requirements. The surplus production, for which there was not a ready market, led to depressed producer prices. A similar situation occurred throughout the EU. This comes after a number of years of relatively good prices. Collective action, by everyone involved in the trade, is needed to deal with the present situation. Poor quality produce, some of which is only suitable for animal feed, must be kept off the market as there are adequate supplies of quality potatoes available. I have requested An Bord Glas to increase promotion of potatoes over the next two months in an effort to boost demand.

For the future, the market needs more discipline, especially as regards the area and varieties planted, so that production will be brought more into line with the quantity and quality demanded by consumers and processors.
