Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Control of Farmyard Pollution.

James McDaid

Question:

40 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason his Department is no longer accepting applications in respect of farm buildings from small farmers who are not in the REP scheme. [5764/97]

Brendan Smith

Question:

208 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has to lift the suspension of the control of farmyard pollution scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8497/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 208 together.

Due to the funding limitations within the Operational Programme for Agriculture, Rural Development and Forestry the scheme for the control of farm pollution was suspended for new applications in April 1995. It has not been possible to accept new applications since that date.

As stated in Partnership 2000, it is the Government's intention to give priority to reintroduction of the scheme if additional funds become available at the mid-term review of the Structural Funds. Should these funds become available consideration will be given to the overall focus of the scheme.

Partnership 2000 also indicated that provision would be made by way of improved capital allowances for a targeted and monitored measure to support investment by farmers in necessary pollution control measures. Details of the scheme which was announced by the Minister for Finance in his budget speech will be available shortly from the Revenue Commissioners.
