Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Brucellosis Testing.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

77 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to recent comments by members of the Irish Veterinary Union that the current brucellosis blood test is only fully accurate 21 days after calving; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8405/97]

I am aware of the recent comments by members of the Irish Veterinary Union. The position is that in a small number of cases blood samples taken from animals in advanced stages of pregnancy may not give an antibody response to the brucellosis test. However, the number of such cases is low and does not represent a barrier to brucellosis eradication.
