Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Transport of Dangerous Waste.

Micheál Martin

Question:

133 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself that the existing legislation in relation to the storage, movement and transport of dangerous wastes is adequate. [8838/97]

I intend to make regulations shortly to introduce a waste collection permit system under section 34 of the Waste Management Act, 1996. In the meantime, the following are the main provisions, within my area of responsibility, relevant to the matter:

— Part IV of the Waste Management Act, 1996, in relation to the holding, collection and movement of waste;

— Council Regulation (EEC) No. 259/93, supplemented by the European Communities (Transfrontier Shipment of Waste) Regulations, 1994, which governs the transfrontier shipment of waste; and

— the provision in relation to the storage and movement of certain wastes within the State contained in the European Communities (Toxic and Dangerous Waste) Regulations, 1982, the European Communities (Asbestos Waste) Regulations, 1990 and the European Communities (Waste Oils) Regulations, 1992.
