Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Local Authority Housing.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

136 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Environment if he has approved the upgrading and remedial works in the eight local authority estates in respect of which Fingal County Council has requested funding from his Department; his views on whether these estates, which were previously owned by Dublin Corporation, were handed over to the county council in poor condition; and if he will expedite funding of the necessary works. [8911/97]

In the context of the transfer of ownership of Dublin Corporation housing in the county areas, it was envisaged that a limited level of capital funding would be authorised to meet the cost of necessary once-off works to upgrade the houses and the environment of the transferred estates, and to provide necessary supporting infrastructures. Fingal County Council has been advised that it is not possible to authorise expenditure to meet a programme of works on the scale submitted by it. The council has now been requested to submit revised proposals which have regard to the levels of expenditure initially envisaged.

Additional resources have accrued to the council's revenue account arising from the transfer of houses and these are, and will continue to be, available to contribute to the upkeep of the transferred stock. The council also recently received an allocation of £500,000 over two years under the estate improvement programme in respect of houses in the Corduff area.
