Vol. 477 No. 2

Other Questions. - Dublin Historic Site.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

16 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will acquire for the State the historic site (details supplied) in Dublin 8 in view of its archaeological heritage and in due deference to the concept of natural justice for the owner of the site whose development proposals are prevented under the provisions contained in the National Monuments Acts, 1932-4; and his views on other approaches to the matter that might balance the requirements for preservation with the small inner city residential proposals. [7028/97]

Discussions with the developer and Dublin Corporation are taking place with a view to arriving at a satisfactory solution in respect of the site referred to by the Deputy which is of such archaeological importance that it has to be treated as an exceptional case.

In general development of sites is subject to resolution of the archaeology and, in accordance with practice, the cost of this will continue to be met by developers.
