208 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Education when the junior certificate was announced; the Minister who announced it; the year in which pupils first undertook the junior certificate; and the relevant Minister at that time. [9173/97]
The arrangements relating to the introduction of the junior certificate programme were outlined in circular letter M16/89 issued to the authorities of second level schools in July 1989. The programme was introduced for pupils commencing second level education in September 1989 and was examined for the first time in June 1992.
The Deputy was Minister for Education when the programme was introduced and Deputy Brennan was Minister when it was first examined.
