Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

227 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Justice the additional Garda resources, if any, which will be put into the areas of Dublin 7, 9 and 11 in view of the large population and the increase in the age profile of these areas, and the increase in local public concern about crime levels. [8858/97]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda resources and personnel to different areas. Postal divisions and Garda divisions do not share the same geographical boundaries. The general area of Dublin 11 is policed as part of DMA north division, while the general area of Dublin 7 and 9 is policed as part of DMA north division and DMA north-central division.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the following are the details of Garda strength and population for the areas concerned:

Population*

Garda Personnel (31-3-97)

DMA North

354,818

788 all ranks

DMA North-Central

57,913

533 all ranks

* Based on 1991 Census.
I am also informed that the areas concerned are patrolled by uniformed and plain clothes personnel, both by foot and mobile patrols. In addition, these areas are also patrolled by the many specialist units operating throughout the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
I understand from the Garda authorities that the divisional officers for the divisions concerned are satisfied that the best possible Garda coverage is provided throughout the divisions with the current deployment of resources. Following the attestation of probationer gardaí on 2 April this year, five each were assigned to the DMA north division and DMA north-central division. I am assured that Garda resources for both divisions are continually reviewed and changes made as necessary.
