Question:

235 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the five most common crimes for which men are likely to receive custodial sentences; the five most common crimes for which women are likely to receive custodial sentences; and the average custodial sentence received by men and women respectively. [9074/97]

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows. It is in respect of 1993 which is the latest year for which comprehensive statistics are available.

(1) Five most common crimes for which offenders are committed to prison:

Male Offenders

1. Road Traffic Act Offences — 27.8 per cent of committals under sentence.

2. Larceny — 6.4 per cent of committals under sentence.

3. Assault — 4.5 per cent of committals under sentence.

4. Malacious Damage — 5.3 per cent of committals under sentence.

5. Debtors-Sureties-Contempts of Court — 5.2 per cent of committals under sentence.

Female Offenders

1. Larceny — 28.6 per cent of committals under sentence.

2. Road Traffic Act Offences — 14 per cent of committals under sentence.

3. Receiving Stolen Goods — 7.6 per cent of committals under sentence.

4. Assault-Resist Garda — 4.3 per cent of committals under sentence.

5. Forgery-Uttering — 3.4 per cent of committals under sentence.
6. Drunkenness — 3.4 per cent of committals under sentence.
(2) Average sentence imposed:
Male offenders — approximately 11 months.
Female Offenders — approximately seven months.
