Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - BSE Compensation.

Joe Walsh

Question:

265 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will have arrangements made to pay BSE compensation to a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [8673/97]

Under the BSE/Agrimonetary compensation package which I announced recently, the person concerned will qualify for top-up payments of approximately £10 per head in respect of 50.66 animals which qualified for payment under the 1996 special beef premium scheme. It is expected that these top-up payments will be made during May 1997.

The person concerned may also qualify for additional top-up payments on these animals under the 1996 BSE compensation package. The amount payable will depend on the amount of money recouped from farmers who, having been paid top-ups last October in respect of suckler cows and steers which qualified for premia in 1995, had fewer animals qualifying for these premia in 1996. These adjustments will be made later this year.
