Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Radon Gas.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

317 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the progress, if any, there has been regarding the possibility of implementing a non-means tested grant to allow dwelling houses in areas of high concentration of radon gas to reduce the adverse effects to health from this gas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8767/97]

I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 24 of 12 February 1997. The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland is concentrating large resources on the National Radon Survey and is continuing to build up detailed information concerning the distribution of radon affected areas throughout the country. While I can make no commitment at present concerning the provision of financial assistance to householders in respect of remedial work to their homes, the matter is being kept under constant review in the light of Exchequer commitments and overall budgetary constraints.
