Written Answers - Proposed Legislation.

Máirín Quill

Question:

8 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the current position in relation to the proposed Broadcasting Bill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9139/97]

The Government, at its meeting on 11 March 1997, agreed to the Minister's proposals for new broadcasting legislation. The proposals were published on 18 March 1997 in a document entitled Clear Focus — The Government's Proposals for Broadcasting Legislation, nó sa leagan Gaeilge, Fócas Géar — Moltaí an Rialtais do Reachtaíocht Chraolacháin, copies of which were placed in the Oireachtas Library on that day. The Minister's intention in publishing the proposals was to assist further debate in this area. The scheme of the Bill proposed has been referred to the Attorney General for drafting. However, the Minister will take further suggestions and comments on the proposals into consideration during the drafting process and before Government approval is secured for the formal text of the Bill to be introduced in the Oireachtas in due course.
