Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Maritime Museum.

Mary Wallace

Question:

39 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, which are in place for a maritime museum. [9009/97]

Applications have been received by the Minister under phase II of the Cultural Development Incentives Scheme 1994-1999 in respect of two maritime museum projects, one in Greencastle, County Donegal, and the other in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin. The Minister has taken decisions as to the allocation, in principle, of grant assistance to a number of the applications received by him under phase II of the scheme. The applications in respect of the Greencastle and Dún Laoghaire maritime museum projects have not been successful at this stage.

However, in anticipation of the possibility that some of the applications which have received offers, in principle, of grant assistance under phases I and II of the scheme will not go ahead within the timescale of the current round of Structural Funds, the Minister is drawing up a stand-by list of projects which may be considered for assistance in due course in this eventuality. The Minister hopes to be in a position to make his decisions on the projects to be included on that list shortly.

An application has also been received by the Minister under the Ireland/Northern Ireland INTERREG II Programme in respect of the Greencastle project. This application is under consideration at present by the working group set up to assess such applications.
