Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Employment Figures.

James Leonard

Question:

44 Mr. Leonard asked the Taoiseach the number of people in employment in County Cavan and County Monaghan on 1 January 1994, 1 January 1995, 1 January 1996 and 1 January 1997. [8889/97]

The annual labour force survey (LFS) provides statistics for regions but, unfortunately, does not give results at county level. The latest LFS results relate to April 1996. The estimated number of persons at work in the Border region (which includes Cavan and Monaghan) was 127,200 in April 1994, 132,900 in April 1995 and 131,700 in April 1996. These figures are based on the principal economic status classification.

The latest corresponding county figures are based on the 1991 census of population. In the April 1991 census, 17,268 persons in Cavan and 16,474 persons in Monaghan were classified as at work. Corresponding results from the 1996 census will be available in the first half of 1998.
