Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - MMDS Transmissions.

John Ellis

Question:

80 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Health the action, if any, he proposes to take regarding the banning of MMDS in view of the fact that it has been banned for health reasons in Canada. [8865/97]

Limerick East): Operators of multichannel microwave distribution systems (MMDS) here are licensed by the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, Licensed operators are obliged to comply with the safety levels for non-ionising radiation emissions laid down by the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA). Emissions measured here have been well within the recommended levels. The Department of Transport, Energy and Communications has advised that it is not aware of any ban on MMDS in Canada and that the safety guidelines for broadcasting transmissions at MMDS frequencies there are similar to those applying here.
