Vol. 477 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sentence Appeals.

Ben Briscoe

Question:

27 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases in each of the past three years in which the defendants have appealed against the severity of their sentence; the number of appeals which were successful; the role of the State in such appeals; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9106/97]

In relation to the first two parts of the question, I refer the Deputy to Question No. 211 which I answered on 5 March, 1997.

The role of the State in such appeals is a matter for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
