Question:

37 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the current overall number and the number of rank of the serving prison officers in each of the custodial centres in the State; their rate of remuneration; and the average overtime paid to each rank in the 12 months prior to 27 March 1997. [9097/97]

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following tables:

Table One — Prison staff in custodial centres by institution and grade.

Table Two — Rates of pay and allowances for Prison Service Grades.

Table Three — Average overtime by rank for tax year 1996-97.

These figures are calculated on the basis of staff serving at 4/4/97 including those not serving at custodial centres. In addition, £443,448.11 was earned during this period for Saturday attendance overtime — after 1 p.m. It is not possible to provide a breakdown by rank for these payments.
