Vol. 477 No. 4

Written Answers. - Buckley Commission Report.

Seán Doherty

Question:

30 Mr. Doherty asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his views on the findings of the Buckley Commission in relation to pay for semi-State executives under the aegis of his Department; the action, if any, he has taken in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9260/97]

As Minister for Tourism and Trade, I have responsibility for three non-commercial State-sponsored bodies. The bodies in question are Bord Fáilte. An Bord Tráchtála, the Irish Trade Board and CERT, the State tourism training agency.

Recommendations regarding the remuneration of the chief executive of those bodies were included in the recent report of the review body on higher remuneration in the public sector which was chaired by Michael Buckley. As indicated in the statement issued on 4 March on publication of the report, the Government has decided, in line with the established Government policy of accepting the recommendations of this independent review body, to accept the recommendations in the report in principle.

The question of implementation of the rates which would flow from the recommendations will be considered at a later date in the context of Partnership 2000.
