Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Signposts.

Ivor Callely

Question:

159 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn by the Automobile Association to the very poor standard of directional signposting in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9660/97]

I am not aware of any relevant representations or submissions made by the Automobile Association.

In December last, I published a comprehensive traffic signs manual which sets out policy, and the standards to be applied, in relation to all aspects of road signage, including directional signs. The manual presents a code of practice which will help to ensure that the traffic sign system in this country is both effective and well maintained. A copy of the manual is available in the Oireachtas Library.

Responsibility for the provision and maintenance of traffic signs on the national roads network is a matter for the National Roads Authority. Responsibility for signs on non-national roads is a matter for individual local authorities.
