Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Brendan Smith

Question:

207 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the hardship caused to children by the inadequate transport service to a school (details supplied) in County Cavan; if she will sanction the provision of a second bus to provide an adequate level of transport to this school in view of the delays caused to children on arrival for school opening and at the close of the school day; her views on whether the current service is inadequate and a cause of worry to parents; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9679/97]

I wish to advise the Deputy that the children concerned have an adequate level of service under the school transport scheme. My Department has examined this case and the provision of an extra bus is not warranted in this instance.

In the circumstances, my Department is not in a position to sanction the provision of a second bus on this route as requested.
Bus Éireann, as agents of my Department, is required to operate the school transport scheme in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. As a result, buses are often required to operate a number of runs. This is to provide a basic level of service while achieving optimum value from scarce resources.
