Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Genetic Engineering.

Ivor Callely

Question:

299 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on genetic engineering in the area of agriculture and food; the consideration, if any, his Department has given this matter; the likely implications from a food perspective in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9662/97]

Genetically engineered foods have been on world markets for many years. The technology has environmental and economic benefits while at the same time raising environmental and food safety concerns. It is likely to make a significant impact on agriculture and food production over the coming years.

An innovatory agriculture and food sector, in order to remain competitive, must in the long-term be open to the opportunities provided by such technology which of course must be used responsibly under proper regulatory control. In this connection the European Union has already introduced legislation governing novel foods and the release of genetically modified organisms into the environment. My Department continues to keep all developments in the area under review.
