Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Food Safety Controls.

Joe Walsh

Question:

333 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on the question of establishing an EU regulatory and control body for food similar to the United States Food and Drugs Administration. [9943/97]

The Commission has already taken steps to reorganise its directorates so as to more clearly define responsibility for food safety. In future the Agriculture Directorate will be responsible for legislation whereas the Consumer Affairs Directorate will be responsible for inspections. I have already indicated in reply to a previous question that I will favourably consider any initiative which may be presented by the Commission which is aimed at strengthening food safety controls.
