Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Regulations.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

36 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to introduce an equivalent to the breathalyser to deter what is believed to be a growing number of young drivers high on drugs. [9041/97]

It is an offence to drive, or attempt to drive, or be in charge of, a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Section 14 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994, provides that where a garda is of the opinion that a person is committing such an offence, that person may be required to give a blood or urine sample. I am advised that no apparatus equivalent to the breathalyser is available for the purpose of testing for drugs in drivers.
