41 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Environment the number of fines imposed in 1996 under the Litter Act, 1982, on a local authority basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9756/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41, 52 and 55 together.

Details of on-the-spot fines issued by local authorities in 1996, the latest year for which information is available, are set out in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

The most recent information available to my Department indicates there were 21 full-time and 66 part-time litter wardens employed by local authorities during 1996. Information regarding 1997 is not yet available.
