Vol. 477 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telephone Tapping.

Tony Gregory

Question:

92 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the telephone of any member of Dáil Éireann was tapped during the years from 1980 to 1990; and if the telephone conversations of any member of Dáil Éireann were intercepted inadvertently or otherwise during this time. [10107/97]

Tony Gregory

Question:

93 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the telephone of any member of Dáil Éireann was intercepted or tapped during the course of the Nicky Kelly hunger strike in 1983. [10108/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos.92 and 93 together.

It has never been the practice to disclose the precise information sought by the Deputy and I do not propose to depart from established practice on this occasion. However, there are precedents whereby the House has been informed that no warrant was authorised during particular periods in respect of the telephone of any Member of the Oirechtas. I propose to avail of those precedents to assure the House that no such warrant was authorised during the years 1980 to 1990, nor indeed since.
