Vol. 477 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

99 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that sufficient Garda resources are available to stem the tide in car thefts (details supplied) which are a regular occurrence for residents in the Terenure area of Dublin south central; whether the Garda authorities in Terenure are conscious of this problem; the steps, if any, she intends taking to have this matter addressed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10117/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the current deployment of resources in this area is adequate in meeting the present policing needs.

The road referred to in the letter is patrolled by gardaí from Terenure station. A community garda is assigned to the area and it is also patrolled by a member as part of Operation Dochas. The area is frequently patrolled by mobile units with the district motor cyclist on dedicated patrol.

I am further informed that since 1 January 1997 there has been two reported unauthorised takings of cars from the person in question. The area will continue to receive the appropriate Garda attention. The person the Deputy referred to wrote to me recently and I will reply to her shortly.
