Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Accommodation.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

132 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice the current capacity for custodial places in Castlerea Prison, County Roscommon; the number of places which are currently occupied; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10308/97]

Castlerea prison has a capacity at present for 25 inmates and on Friday 11 April 1997 there were 22 prisoners in custody there. Plans are well advanced to expand capacity in this unit to 40 prisoners and building work to provide approximately 137 further spaces in a separate prison on this site has now commenced.
