Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Question:

135 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social Welfare when an appeal will be dealt with for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the fact that the appeals office received the notice of appeal on 17 January 1997, and the delay is causing financial hardship. [10230/97]

The person concerned was in receipt of unemployment assistance at a reduced rate on the basis of a means assessment of £49.39 per week based on his wife's earnings and capital. His claim was recently reviewed and, on the basis of an increase in both earnings and capital, his means were increased to £86.00 per week with effect from 6 November 1996.

An appeals officer of the independent social welfare appeals office has decided that an oral hearing of the appeal is necessary. This is being arranged and the person concerned will be advised of the exact date and venue as soon as arrangements have been completed.
