Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Amalgamation.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

10 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that the initial suggestion to acquire a 16 acre site will be proceeded with rather than a new proposal to acquire a smaller site of ten acres in relation to the proposed amalgamation of the Sacred Heart of Mary secondary school, Waterford, and Slieverue vocational school, Kilkenny; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9553/97]

I am not aware of any proposal to acquire a ten acre site for the proposed new community school.

A feasibility study has been carried out of the proposed site at Ferrybank, Waterford. As a result of this report, it has been decided to locate the new school on this site.

The site, which is approximately 15 acres in extent, will more than adequately facilitate the amalgamation of Slieverue vocational school and the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Mary secondary school, Ferrybank.

The Department has now commenced negotiations with the owners for the purchase of the land.
