The report on the results of the Irish national adult literacy survey, which was carried out under the aegis of the OECD, has not yet been completed. When it has been received and considered by my Department, I will arrange for publication and for a considered response to be made to it.
I am aware from a preliminary briefing that the report will provide comprehensive information on levels of literacy within a range of categories and will place these within a wider comparative context.
The report will confirm there is a significant literacy problem here. I expect it will be extremely valuable in representing the extent and nature of the problem as accurately as possible.
