Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Literacy Skills.

Máirín Quill

Question:

54 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if the findings of the recent OECD report on literacy levels have been made available to her Department; if so, the nature of the report's indication on literacy levels in Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10173/97]

The report on the results of the Irish national adult literacy survey, which was carried out under the aegis of the OECD, has not yet been completed. When it has been received and considered by my Department, I will arrange for publication and for a considered response to be made to it.

I am aware from a preliminary briefing that the report will provide comprehensive information on levels of literacy within a range of categories and will place these within a wider comparative context.

The report will confirm there is a significant literacy problem here. I expect it will be extremely valuable in representing the extent and nature of the problem as accurately as possible.
