Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Joe Jacob

Question:

81 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the noxious odours emanating from the sewerage in Arklow, County Wicklow; if his attention has further been drawn to the health and hygiene implications of the current system, to the hardship which this causes for residents and visitors and to the adverse effect which the current system is having on the town's tourism industry; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the town's industrial development can only be assisted by the new Arklow bypass if adequate sewerage facilities are also provided; if he will issue approval to Arklow Urban District Council for the preparation of tender documents for the proposed main drainage scheme for the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10208/97]

I have approved the preliminary report for this scheme and the local authority is being notified of my decision. It is now a matter for the council to proceed with the preparation of contract documents for the scheme.
