Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

94 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a remedial teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the fact that the current arrangements require a teacher to cover three schools with a pupil complement of 542 pupils; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10205/97]

Noel Davern

Question:

95 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to provide access for the pupils at a school (details supplied) to a remedial teacher; when this access will be made possible; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10206/97]

Brendan Smith

Question:

110 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the urgent need to appoint a remedial teacher on a shared basis between Kill, Drung, Lisboduff and Drung Central schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10300/97]

Joe Jacob

Question:

122 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for Education if she will provide remedial teaching facilities in schools (details supplied) in County Wicklow in order to redress the inequity of a situation where up to 30 per cent of the pupils in these schools require remedial teaching but are being deprived of an opportunity to avail of the benefits of our modern education system due to the absence of this critical facility, particularly in view of the fact that all adjacent schools have such facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10327/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 94, 95, 110 and 122 together.

I am not in a position at present to indicate whether additional remedial teachers will be made available to primary schools for the 1997-98 school year.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any year is determined by resource availability in that year and the level of competing demands from other special needs areas. The position regarding such allocations for the 1997-98 school year is currently being considered in my Department.

In the event of additional remedial teacher posts becoming available for allocation, the needs of the schools in question will be considered.
