Question:

118 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the observations, if any, she has made on the distribution of grades in the 1996 junior certificate examinations in science and Gaeilge; and the directives, if any, she has in respect of these subjects for the 1997 examinations. [10323/97]

The distribution of the grades in the 1996 junior certificate examination in science and Gaeilge was broadly similar to that in the previous four years since the new syllabi were introduced in 1992.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment reviews all new syllabi and their examination format after a number of years. In the light of this review which is under way at present any recommendations made will be considered by my Department. This may result in some changes to the structure and format of future examinations in these subjects. I have given no directives in respect of junior certificate examinations in science and Gaeilge in 1997.
