Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Máirín Quill

Question:

124 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if she has reconsidered her position in relation to the appointment of a teacher under the breaking the cycle scheme to St. Mary's on the Hill, Knocknaheeney, Cork; if so, if she will appoint such a teacher in this financial year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10344/97]

As I have previously indicated to the Deputy, the criteria under which schools were selected for inclusion in the breaking the cycle initiated and the selection process itself, were devised and carried out by the Education Research Centre.

All eligible schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, were invited by the Education Research Centre to complete a detailed questionnaire devised by the centre. The data submitted by schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, were fully taken into account by the Education Research Centre in the selection process.

However, I am advised by the Education Research Centre that, based on the information it provided, the school in question did not qualify for inclusion in the initiative.

In the circumstances, I am not in a position to allocate additional teachers to the school in question under the breaking the cycle initiative.
