Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Liam Aylward

Question:

103 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Environment if he will have finance made available to Kilkenny County Council through the specific improvement grant scheme for a realignment at the Rower Village in County Kilkenny in order to increase traffic safety through the village and in view of the fact that this has been sought by Kilkenny County Council in recent years but without success. [10491/97]

Road grants have been fully allocated this year and there are no additional moneys at my disposal from which a further grant could be made to any local authority. While Kilkenny County Council received a grant allocation of £900,000 in 1997 for eight projects under the EU co-financed grants scheme, their application for funding for road realignment at Rower Village was not successful. However, it will be open to the council to consider whether to resubmit this application for consideration for funding in 1998. Decisions in relation to projects selected for funding under the EU co-financed scheme depend on compliance with strict EU eligibility criteria, the need to prioritise projects, the demands from local authorities generally and the overall funds available.
