Seán Haughey

Question:

141 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education if she will provide finance to 12 schools for the provision of school gyms; if so, if she will include St. David's Christian Brothers school, Artane, Dublin 5, in her list; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10483/97]

Noel Dempsey

Question:

168 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education whether St. David's Christian Brothers school, Artane, Dublin 5, will be one of the 12 schools to be allocated a gymnasium this year. [10632/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 141 and 168 together.

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls on a phased basis as resources permit to all schools which do not already have them.

Twelve schools are included on the 1997 capital programme for physical education halls. It is proposed to commence construction on a number of these in 1997 and to complete architectural design on the remainder.

The question of providing physical education facilities at St. David's CBS, Artane, Dublin, which is not one of the schools listed on the capital programme, can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for additional classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country. I am not in a position at this stage to state when physical education facilities will be provided in this particular case.

However, should financial circumstances permit, the school will be given every consideration.
