Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mainline Rail Projects.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

256 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will give a breakdown of the figure of £630 million quoted by him in Dublin Matters, Spring 1997, as being the sum of money being provided for mainline rail in view of the fact that this figure differs remarkably from the sum of £275 million allocated to mainline rail in the operational programme for transport to which he makes reference in Dublin Matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10379/97]

The article referred to by the Deputy clearly states that £630 million is being provided for mainline rail and other transport projects under the operational programme for transport 1994-9.

Table 8 of the operational programme for transport sets out the financing of total transport investment for the period 1994-9 including £275 million on mainline rail and £356 million on DTI and other public transport — a total of £631 million.
