Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Levels.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

24 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of jobs lost on the northside of Cork city since the Government took office. [10562/97]

Employment performance in companies assisted by Forbairt and IDA Ireland is monitored via the Forfás employment survey which is conducted annually. The survey data is collated on a county by county basis. While I am not in a position, therefore, to provide employment data on a sub-county basis, I can inform the Deputy that job loss figures for County Cork in the period 1994 to 1996 amounted to 4,936. The Deputy should also be aware, however, that in the same period, 7,427 new jobs were created in companies assisted by Forbairt and IDA Ireland. This positive performance in terms of new job creation led to a net increase of 2,491 jobs in County Cork in the period.

An additional 798 new jobs were created in the period by enterprises assisted by the county enterprise boards in Cork.

Ivor Callely

Question:

25 Mr. Callely asked the Taoiseach the age group headings used when compiling long-term unemployment statistics; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10540/97]

The published report on the 1996 labour force survey contains two tables relating to the duration of unemployment. Table 38 shows the number of unemployed persons, also males and females, who were unemployed for less than one year and for one year or more for the years 1991 to 1996. Table 39 gives an age breakdown for 1996 according to the age groups 15-24, 25-44 and 45 years or over. Other tables on age by duration of unemployment, with a more detailed age breakdown, have also been compiled and are available, on request, from the Central Statistics Office.

An age by duration analysis of the live register is also compiled, twice per year, in respect of April and October. The age groups used in this analysis are: under 20 years, 20-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-59 and 60-64 years.
